Scabies is a very contagious infection that effects many people worldwide each year. A scabies rash can be extremely uncomfortable for anyone who is infected. For most people, you can treat the rash by visiting your doctor and applying a simple cream.

There is a common misconception that only “dirty” or unwashed people can get scabies. This is absolutely a myth and it is very possible to get scabies simply by sharing clothing or furniture with someone who is infected. Scabies is nothing to be embarrassed about and can happen to anyone at anytime.

If you have scabies, this means that an itch mite has found its way into your skin. These mites are very small and are not able to be seen on the skin.

One of the telltale signs of scabies is the terrible itching of the skin. Many people have reported that the itching is worse at night. Common areas for itching are the hands, feet, ankles and stomach. You may experience itching in some or all of theses areas, as each case is different from the last. Some people may itch all over the body, while others will only feel the symptoms in certain areas.

Your doctor will perform an exam once you are seen. If the doctor feels that you do have scabies, they may write you out a prescription for a cream that can kill the itch mites fast. You can apply this cream at home to rid yourself of scabies.

Once you have filled your prescription for the cream, you will need to go home and apply the cream from head to toe including your hair. Follow your doctor’s instructions for how long to leave the cream on. In many cases it will be for twelve hours or longer.

While you have the cream on your body, wash all of your clothes, pets, children and bedding well. Be sure to use hot water when laundering items and dry on high heat. This will help kill all of the itch mites and prevent the infections from spreading or reoccurring.
