When there is a fear of intimacy, romantic relationships between two adults it can be complicated. The relationship might be over before it starts. When people do not trust other people or the fear of getting too close emotionally will cause fear of intimacy. Fear of intimacy affects adults so that they are hindered from having relationships with other people.
It is not actually the intimacy itself that people fear. If people could be guaranteed that intimacy would continue to be a positive experience, they would have no fear of it. What they fear is the possibility of getting hurt as a result of being intimate with another.
In order to overcome the fear of intimacy you must first understand it. Fear of intimacy involves the reluctance to open up and reveal your true self, perhaps because you’ve been hurt in the past. Or, if you grew up in an emotionally and socially closed environment and never learned how to be vulnerable to either friends or lovers, you may have a hard time opening up now. This is fear of intimacy. We’ve all been betrayed and hurt by loved ones in big and small ways – a thousand tiny betrayals. Regardless of how the pain was delivered, whether it was accidentally or deliberately caused, we’re naturally reluctant to open ourselves up again. Not wanting to get hurt can lead to an extreme fear of intimacy.
It will require you some courage to overcome the fear of intimacy because you will have to learn how to reveal yourself more to others. You must share some of these hidden secrets with your friends and you must be honest expressing what you feel. Be yourself.
When you are with your friends you should talk about what is going on in your life, how you feel and what you are thinking. You need to point out what is important to you. Doing this will build trust in a relationship. You should not play games such as expecting your partner to read your mind or drop hints rather than say what it is you mean. After doing all this, you may still have a fear of intimacy but you will at least be honest about it.
