Xanax is a benzodiazepine drug that is used by doctors for treatment of those that suffer from disorders and anxiety. Sometimes it’s also used for curing insomnia or those that suffer from acute agitation. The drug should only used by those for whom it’s been prescribed.
The dosage of the drug is measures by the doctor and can be taken in tablets and pill form. The drug can be taken 2-3 times a day and is usually 0.25 mg a day – 0.5 mg a day. The drug may be adjusted depending on the side effects on the other requirements of an individual.
Side effects do occur with this drug. However, it’s not necessary that all those that take drug will get side effects. In most cases the side effects are quite minor and soon disappear after a few days. In case they don’t your health care provider can easily take care of it.
These are the side effects that are commonly seen in most cases. However, the side effects may not be limited to only these ones. These are some of the problems that are faced by the users of the drug. They include drowsiness, fatigue and tiredness, some coordination problems, irritability, memory problems, increase in appetite, sexual disinterest and many more. Women may also find a change in their menstrual cycle.
Those that have prior medical problems such as glaucoma, depression, liver disease (this can include liver cirrhosis or liver failure), kidney diseases, lung problems including breathing problem and allergies to food or even benzodiazepine. Women that are pregnant or suspect that they are pregnant or thinking of being pregnant should intimate the same to their doctors. Those that are breastfeeding must also intimate the same.
If you are taking other medication, supplements as well as other drugs, the same should be conveyed to your health care provider. This is a controlled drug since it has an ability of being misused or abused. For this reason, the medicine isn’t prescribed for those that have previous history of drug or alcohol addiction.
This medicine can be habit forming. However, this is the case for those that have been taking really high doses for a prolonged period of time. When you stop suddenly Xanax can cause withdrawal symptoms. The drug needs to be tapered before you can fully come to a stop.
After using the drug, person shouldn’t do activities that require them to stay mentally and physically alert such as driving or operating heavy machinery. The drug causes drowsiness and doing these activities after taking the drug can be a cause for accidents. Even elderly patients should refrain from doing any activities after taking these drugs since the chances of falling hurt or having an accident is quite high.
